Ego Bait

The idea behind ego bait is to produce content that features key industry influencers – leading them, hopefully, to share your content and link back to your site. Although the name may sound questionable, this strategy is really just another form of networking. By featuring influencers, they get a boost in promotion, your site gets great content, and everyone involved gets wider exposure. It really is a content win-win. One great strategy for ego bait is a “best-of” list. These can be a great way to feature multiple influencers at once, and it’s easy for those influencers to link back to and share your post. Other types of ego bait posts might include:

  • Interview with an influencer – Pick someone people recognize and respect
  • Resource list – Point users toward helpful tools or how-to’s
  • Expert guest posts – Have someone outside write a post for your blog
  • Featured products list – Match up your products with those from other businesses

Be Topical

There are many people on the Internet who are often interested in the same thing. Use this to your advantage. Capitalize on current events by looking at search volumes for popular terms on Google Trends or Twitter, then write content relating to those topics. Doing this helps to ensure that your content is relevant to your users and keeps them interested, while also making it inherently more shareable and more likely to be useful to new potential users.


Make sure your content is both easy to share and something people will want to share. Always be distributing your content through all of your social channels. If you can, add a “share on Facebook/Twitter/etc.” button to any piece of content on your site. Make your headlines pop, and do not be afraid of images: pictures are the most shareable form of media, infographics in particular. With every piece of content you create, ask yourself: would I want to share this with my network? How easy would it be for me to do that?

Create Great Content

As much as this is a cliché, we can never stress it enough: you must create great content as a baseline. The Internet is a sea of content, and in order to rise above the waves, your content must be relevant, engaging, and impactful for your users. The most important thing, above all else, is that the content itself be high quality and relevant.
